Can you make money with blogs? Yes absolutely, though claims of enormous wads of cash for little work are to be treated with suspicion. The fact is that those lucky people with big earnings from blogs have worked for it. Just like with a traditional website the larger the volume of traffic to your blog the more you can make. Getting that traffic is a matter of building up incoming links, on page optimization for search engines and advertising, a whole other subject of its own. Monetizing that traffic is what we look at here.

One easy way to monetise your blog is with contextual advertising such as the programs from Google’s Adsense and Chitika. These are small ads which are automatically selected by their relevance to the subject of the page they appear on. After signing up for the program you get a snippet of code to include in your pages where you want the ads to appear. The program provider then serves ads which are relevant to your audience and shares the revenue those ads raise with you. Depending on the subject, these can be quite generous payments. Some specialized subjects can attract payments measured in dollars per click though typically the payments are less.

Another way to make money with blogs is to join a paid to post system. You get paid to write posts relating to various products or websites. If your site is a genuine one and not just made to carry ads you can make relatively large amounts of money without having big volumes of visitors. There are some restrictions as to how much you can post to stop you abusing these systems but if you have a blog with original material you can do quite well with systems like this.

Another avenue is to sell links from your blog to other websites or directly to merchants. Google frowns on selling links just to improve another sites pagerank but you can still sell advertising space if its structured correctly. Webmaster forums and your own networking efforts are good ways to find opportunities like this and by using Paypal you can keep track on payments easily.

Selling products as an affiliate has been around since long before blogs but is a very viable method of making money with them. If you’re not already familiar with this concept I’d suggest you sign up with a well established affiliate system like Commission Junction or Linkshare to get the hang of things. Better still learn from the good folks over at Wealthy Affiliate how to be a successful affiliate, they make it easy to understand and follow. You’ll find links on my site.

There are other methods of making money with blogs such as selling custom souvenir shirts, mugs, and the like from Cafepress but these tend to be rather low commissions. If you’re good at setting up blogs you can consider setting them up for a fee or establishing them with traffic to begin with then selling them to folks looking for ready made blogs to move into. This practice known as blog flipping has become more popular recently as established blog properties, just like in real estate, can fetch high prices.

This is not a complete list of ways to make blog money but hopefully it gives you some ideas for your own blog.

I’m going to give you 6 quick pointers on how to optimize your blog to drive traffic and hopefully earn some extra Adsense and affiliate income.

One huge benefit of using blogging as a means to create your site vs. trying to build your own is the ability to monetize your content immediately and not have to worry about page layout, graphics, hosting, domain names, and content management. This is a massive time saver when using the free bloggers such as Blogger or Wordpress hosting. The downside is that you cannot fully control the fine tuning of your site for specific optimizations. Nevertheless, you must let go of this desire and focus on your content – which is a very good thing.

So, let’s start with the key topics you need to consider when optimizing a blog:

1. The Blogging Service
2. Layout
3. Links
4. Keywords
5. Traffic
6. Site Tricks

1. The Blogging Service – this is a very important choice because some of the free blogging services do not allow you to place context ad such as AdSense on the free blogging service (they allow it if you host your own blog). Because of this I strongly recommend using Blogger as your free service since it is easy to use and is ad friendly.

2. Layout – since you are using a free service you must get over the desire to control your site. Let go! Most free blogging sites allow you to tweak the layout somewhat. There are some tricks you can use to easily keep your site a blog but at the same time add sections as if you were on your own site. For example, keep one blog entry for all of your favorite external links and descriptions. This is where you can continue your link sharing with other sites and continually add new ones. Now, add a specific link to this article on the sidebar so that there is a direct reference when the article gets archived. That way any readers will always find the links article and not have to search or stumble upon it. (Note, you can use this same technique for additional pages that refer to specific topics so that you have a directory of topics on your sidebars).

3. Links – besides the links I noted in #2 you should always use plenty of linking from within every article you publish. The internet values links and the more you use from your blog entries the better. Other sites pay attention to who’s linking to them and when they see a referral in their logs your appreciation level increases. Also, add your favorite affiliate and topic links to your sidebars.

4. Keywords – I cannot stress the importance of this but I’m not going to go into detail on keyword identification other than to say that each blog entry should focus on a SEO keyword phrase or name – especially the title. Be sure to use your titles carefully and use the same keywords in your entry. This will mark the blog entry to the keyword topic (remember, each blog entry is a separate web page that can be indexed). Also, be sure to include the keyword near the end of the blog entry as well.

5. Traffic – don’t forget to promote your blog to drive traffic! Use all the means possible to do this – forums, articles, reprint rights, etc. Be sure to post well written comments on other highly ranked blog sites. However, don’t make the mistake and write only a quick comment. Always write your responses in a way that is interesting and direct to the point. There’s enough free material out there to do this!

6. Site Tricks – another simple technique is to place hard coded links to your favorite blog entries and articles in the bottom of the Blog template. That way it will show up on every page. Eventually you can make this your site map which is very important to the search engines. The last thing you want is your blog links to be archived!!

And, of course, don’t forget to add your AdSense sections.

Just by completing these 6 simple tasks you can get your blog monetized in no time at all!

would relate to, or where it would at lead get some commments or a following etc. although i do think my idea is good enough to be paid. i have previusly freelanced for some other sitres. any ideas on who or how to get my foot in the door? and also what sort of price should i command?

If you start a blog (weB LOG), your primary source of money will likely be ad related. Unless your blog becomes extremely popular, you will probably only make some extra spending cash, not thousands of dollars.

Frankly, it’s not totally clear what you’re asking. Do you want to know how to start a blog for yourself? Do you want to know how to get paid writing blog posts for other people?

I recommend that you read articles at Problogger to get some information on making money blogging: http://problogger.net .

A lot of bloggers are blogging free. There isn’t any point in driving traffic to your blog without having a way to profit from all that traffic. You’ve taken time to research and develop keywords, plan your blog posts and set up your blog, now you need to add moneymaking elements to your blog.

There are a few basic ways to profit from a blog, or any web site for that matter. Banner ads are displayed on the borders of a web page. Each time your page is viewed with the banner ad, you are paid. Normally a banner ad program is paid out at a certain rate per 1000 visitors. Although banner ads are popular on many types of websites, there are other more effective means of monitizing your blog. The following technique normally pays better rates than banner ads, and is more worth your time.

A more effective means of gaining income from a blog is through pay-per click ads. You get paid each time a visitor clicks on an ad displayed on your page. Google Adsense is the most popular pay-per-click ad provider. Google has the largest inventory of ads and also pay the most per click. Also, Adsense ads are targeted toward the content that appears on the website. For example, if your blog focuses on small business software, the Adsense ads will be for small business software. The content of the blog determines the ads that appear. This has a major advantage. Because the ads are related to what you reader is reading about, they are more likely to click on the ads, which means that the ads can be very profitable for you.

It is relatively simple to sign up for Google Adsense. Since Blogger.com was taken over by Google, they have started to accept accounts from blog owners rather quickly. If you use Blogger, inserting Google Adsense is extremely simple. It is recommended that you only apply for Adsense after you have at least 500 words posted on your Blog.

Read the “programs policy” section of Adsense carefully, once you’ve set up your account. There are a few things that can get your Adsense account shut down, and Adsense is such a good source of income it would be hard to replace it with something else.

Once you’ve placed the Adsense ads into your blog it will take about 48 hours until the relevant ads appear. After this period of time, if you notice that the ads that are appearing are not relevant to your content you’ll need to do some keyword optimization. Look at your blog posts and titles through the eyes of a search engine spider. Are you using your keywords effectively? How many times do you main keywords appear? Try adding your main keywords at least once per paragraph and make sure to use them in the title of your blog posts as well. This will help increase the relevancy of your ads, which will lead to more clicks and more profits for you.

Blogging is a great way to make money on the internet.
